How Participation is Incentivized

Typically, wellness programs only achieve an employee participation rate of less than 10%. By contrast, the 360 Wellness Plan participation rate usually is in excess of 90% of employees.

Why? Because of the Guaranteed Universal Life Insurance Policy each participating employee receives. The policy’s death benefit on average is around $100,000 per employee (the range is between $25,000 and $150,000), all at no net cost to the employer or employee.

The policy is guaranteed issue, so no medical exams are needed and every employee qualifies.

Death Benefit

A death benefit is a payout to the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Living Benefit

This is when you can accelerate part of the death benefit while you are still alive due to serious injury, chronic or terminal illness.

Cash Value

A cash value life insurance policy is a permanent life policy that includes a cash account. A portion of the premiums paid goes into that account where it can grow tax-deferred.

How Much Does It Cost the Employee? 

The 360 Wellness Plan results in no net out-of-pocket cost to the employer or employees. The 360 Wellness Plan and Universal Life Insurance premiums are paid for via tax savings (see the example below).

Employer FICA Tax Savings

The employer actually saves money each year by implementing the 360 Wellness Plan. This is due to savings in FICA taxes ($500 or more per employee per year).

How the Program Works

Implementing and expanding employer wellness programs may offer our nation the opportunity to not only improve the health of Americans, but also help control health care spending.

The Affordable Care Act creates new incentives and builds on existing wellness program policies to promote employer wellness programs and encourage opportunities to support healthier workplaces.

The Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Labor and the Treasury rules on wellness programs reflect the changes to existing wellness provisions made by the Affordable Care Act and encourage appropriately designed, consumer- protective wellness programs in group health coverage.

The rules to support workplace wellness programs, including “participatory wellness programs” which generally are available without regard to an individual’s health status.

These include, for example, programs that reimburse for the cost that provide a reward to employees for attending a monthly, no-cost health education seminar; or that provides a reward to employees who complete a health risk assessment without requiring them to take further action.

The rules also outline standards for nondiscriminatory “health-contingent wellness programs,” which generally require individuals to meet a specific standard related to their health to obtain a reward like participation.
